Recently had an encounter with people into trend aka future research and not surprisingly it was funny how general their predictions for the future were, they basically said that you cannot predict about the future, which is a fair, true and obvious statement – and then they went on to predict – huhm – had another encounter today reading the trendcentral (via Peter Svarre), where they spot out this trend:

We are finding that personal “cool” is being redefined by technology, and as a result, digital cool is spilling over into the real world. The union of technology and personal identification has created a new set of categories by which cool, or social status in different areas, can be defined. “Digital footprints,” including everything from ringtones, iTunes libraries and MySpace profiles to eBay ratings, World of Warcraft levels and YouTube views, are all contributing to a new digital social status. Who you are online is now having a significant impact on how you are perceived in the “real” world.

Well as it is often stated in this blog – despite the low amount of posts – if these people would take the time to read some of the new research done by a lot of scholars on the internet and more generally media usage, they would know that this is not a new trend, this has been going on for years – not just the intermingling of on- and off-line – but also ”digital footprints” through gaming accounts, blogs, personal homepage (1.0 style). Let me end this with a suggestion to everybody doing future/trendspotting things, read the research on the latest new mediatechnologies – it will make your job a lot easier!

I’m working on a presentation for next Wednesday, and since I’m in Berlin for the Transmediale, I cannot go to my library and I need some statistics for the presentation. Then I saw on flickr that Roskilde Public Library have made a branch in Second Life - wonderful! So I made an account and logged on, only to be extremely disappointed. First of all nobody is there, it is now eleven o’clock – when does this branch open? Then found out that it is actually not a branch, more of a hang out!? Where you can get a free ice cream – huhm…
On their homepage they write: ” Second Life er mere end et online spil. Det er en livsstil, en mulighed for at udleve det liv, du drømmer om…” (eng: “Second life is more than an online game. It is a life style, an opportunity to live the life you are dreaming about living…” – Jesus! Try reading some of the stuff on online gaming – eg. TL Taylors new book Play Between Worlds – and it will become evident that this is not necessarily what online gaming is about – or gaming at all! The quote more or less resembles all the cyberspace thinking of the nineties and this has been modified a lot in the new millennium (speaking in hype terms here).
Well speaking of hype, perhaps this is the reason Roskilde Library is in there, so they could get a mention on the local news yesterday – which is fair enough – just a bit disappointing….

Jeg er blevet bedt af DR om at komme med forslag til hvordan de kan lave deres kulturarvs portal, som er en samlet portal til syv forskellige institutioners digitaliseret materiale. Selv ordet portal skurer sikkert i ørene på de fleste som bare er en lille smule bekendt med social software aka web2.0. Hvis nogen af jer har forslag til hvad de skal gøre, hvordan de tilgængelig gøre materialet så brugeren gider se på det og hvordan brugerne kan hjælpe til med at organisere det, så sig endelig til!
